Last week I finished reading the three books I was working on. And despite reading four books this month so far, I might be a little behind on my TBR. I’m hoping to catch up this week, because there is so much I want to read this fall. So we’ll see what happens! In the meantime, here’s my reading progress this past week:

Currently Reading:

Where Dreams Descend by Janella Angeles

Where Dreams Descend is the first book in a duology. It follows a group of magicians facing off to determine who the next headliner of the Conquering Circus will be. Little do they know there is the threat of danger waiting for them.

I’m almost halfway through this book so far. I absolutely love the writing in this one! I also really like the MC. We’ll have to see how the story continues…

Recently Read:

Lie With Me by Philippe Besson; Translated by Molly Ringwald

Lie With Me follows Philippe, who encounters a man who looks strangely like his first love. The book continues into a recollection of his earlier years, and the hidden affair he’s had, and the relationship he will never forget.

This was a short book, yet also a very impactful one. I listened to it on audiobook but I wish I hadn’t because there were so many quotes I found myself wanting to mark over the course of reading it. There was a lot of telling rather than showing, which I felt at times didn’t contribute to character development, but in other times I felt was a good match for this book.

On A Sunbeam by Tillie Walden

This graphic novel is set in space and follows a ship crew that focuses on re-building broken down structures and returning things to their past state. When Mia joins the crew, we learn of her year in a boarding school where she fell in love with a new student. Eventually, we find Mia’s true purpose of joining the crew is to find her long-lost love.

This is my first graphic novel in ten years! There were a couple open-ended mysteries to the story but I really liked it overall. Something I’ve missed about graphic novels are the ways that stylistic choices in the artwork emphasize the tone or overall direction the story.

Boba by Stacey Kwong and Beyah del Mundo

Boba is written by the duo behind MILK+T, the first self-serve boba bar. This book teaches you all about how to make bubble tea, including how the tapioca pears are made. The founders also included recipes that they created at MILK+T.

I’ve never reviewed a recipe book before, but I saw this book on NetGalley and I couldn’t resist. A review is coming for this one soon! I definitely learned a lot about Boba and how its made, and am now making the drink for myself. I’ll share one of the drinks I made as well!

Up Next:

Seven Devils by Laura Lam and Elizabeth May

Seven Devils is the first in a science-fiction duology. It follows seven resistance fighters and their mission to free the galaxy from the empire – and the roadblocks they face on the way there.

It looks like my library hold came in, so the decision of what to read next has been made easy! I’ve been hearing great things about this book so I can’t wait to dive in.

That’s all for this week’s WWW Wednesday. Leave a comment if you participated this week too so I can read your post – or let me know what you’re currently reading below!
