Emma

Emma by Jane Austen

This is a classic novel that follows the always-meddling Emma and her tendency to play matchmaker for the people in her village – even if its exactly what gets her into trouble.

So uh…I have not made any progress on this book since last week. Maybe this weekend? I’m not sure. I’m just trying to catch up on the books that are a little more time-sensitive for me to get to. Hopefully by next week I’ll have read a little more.

Mortmain Hall by Martin Edwards

Mortmain Hall follows amateur sleuth Rachel Savernake during the 1930’s. While hosting a gathering featuring those who have cheated the gallows, a body is found at the base of a cliff. At first, this is considered to be an accidental death –  but Rachel Savernake is not so sure.

I only just began reading this, so there’s not too many thoughts I have so far. This is one of my NetGalley ARCs and I’ve had it for a while so I definitely wanted to get to it sooner than later. I feel like I haven’t read a mystery book like this in a while!

Mortmain Hall
A Song Below Water

A Song Below Water by Bethany C. Morrow

A Song Below Water follows a Tavia, a siren who has to keep her identity under wraps as she lives in Portland, Oregon. With her best friend Effie, they navigate high school life together. That is, until the tensions escalate for Tavia, Effie, and many around the country with the aftermath of a siren murder trial.

I’m a third of a way through the book so far and so far, so good! There’s so much background in this book and a diverse range of topics introduced that I’m really interested in how this book will continue to explore them. Additionally, there’s still several unknown elements about the characters and I’m looking forward to learning even more about them.

Recently Read:

Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison

Invisible Man is a modern classic first published in 1952. It follows the narrator’s journey through the racial divide as he ventures from pursuing an education in the Deep South to pursuing a living in the heart of New York City.

I highly recommend this book. There are so many messages to uncover based on the narrator’s expereinces throughout this book, and despite its age, the narrator’s struggles are still all too familiar to many.

Invisible Man
Tin Man

Tin Man by Sarah Winman

Tin Man follows Ellis and Michael, who befriend each other at twelve years old. The two grow to become close friends, but one day, their friendship becomes something more. But ten years later, a very different outcome occurs – Ellis is married, and Michael is missing. This story covers what happens in those ten years.

This book manages to pack a punch and hit hard emotionally despite is length. It’s the kind of book where the synopsis gives away more than enough, but the journey to the conclusion the synopsis makes is what makes the book, and the author’s writing here really pulled that together.

Up Next:

The Adventures of Isabel by Candas Jane Dorsey

The Adventures of Isabel is the first in a mystery series following an ambisexual protagionist and sleuth.

I’m going to continue with some NetGalley books because I need to get on top of my requests (and I also have a bunch of library holds incoming). I feel like I’ve written this exact sentence a month ago – probably because I never learn. Anyway, I feel like I’m not too familiar with this book other than the synopsis, so I’m curious how it’ll turn out for me!

The Adventures of Isabel
