The Fortnight Frights readathon kicked off this weekend! I’m looking forward to reading all of the spooky books I have lined up for the next couple of weeks. I do have quite a lot I want to read this week between readathon and book club discussions, so I’m hoping this week will be a good reading week!
Without further ado, here’s my updates for this week:
Currently Reading:
Things We Lost in the Fire by Mariana Enriquez
Things We Lost in the Fire is set in Argentina where three girls turn to drugs and pain amidst a government-enforced blackout. Their responses and protests demonstrate a haunting, yet familiar reality for many and demonstrate what happens in a world where inequality, corruption, and violence prevail.
This is one of the three group reads for Fortnight Frights. I’m about 20% into the book so far and I’m captivated. So far it’s been especially gruesome, but it’s also depicting reality for so many. I’m curious to learn more about the characters we’ve met so far and how one of the main characters chooses to handle a certain situation given information that only she knows/has experienced.
A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara
A Little Life follows four college classmates who move to New York. Over time they navigate complexities and their own relationships, but they find that Jude has been struggling and continues to suffer, defined by the unspeakable traumas that defined his childhood and his adult life.
I have a feeling I likely won’t finish this book until November! I’m starting to read a little each day, but given the size of this book it will probably still take a bit until I finish it. So far I’m very invested in the characters whenever I pick this one up, so I’m looking forward to learning more about them.
Recently Read:
The Threat Below by Jason Latshaw
Three hundred years ago, a terrifying event nearly devastated humanity; the survivors living in the mountains above the clouds. When their water supply is being poisoned, an expedition, including Icelyn Brathius, must face the monsters that destroyed most of civilization centuries ago.
The author reached out to me and sent the first and second book – thank you! This was such an interesting world and I’m looking forward to reading the second book next month. It was hard to connect with the characters at the beginning, but other than that I like the way this book was written, and I loved the scenes where the characters explore what is uncharted territory for them. Review to come!
Fangs by Sarah Andersen
First featured as a webcomic, Fangs is a graphic novel that features Elsie, a 300-year-old vampire that has never met her match. But one day, she meets Jimmy, a werewolf, in a bar. This book explores their love story and the conflicting interests between vampires and werewolves.
This was such a fun read! I’m glad I have a copy because this is definitely something that would cheer me up when I’m down. It’s a collection of webcomics so it goes quickly – I ended up splitting this into two sittings so I could enjoy it longer. Review to come!
Up Next:
Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier
Rebecca follows an unnamed and orphaned narrator who is proposed to by widower Maxim de Winter. The narrator cannot believe her luck until she arrives at the estate, realizing that her new husband’s late wife will cast a shadow over their lives and threaten to destroy their marriage.
I somehow still have not read this classic, so it’s time to change that! There’s also a Twitter movie night for Fortnight Frights for Rebecca, so I’d love to join in. (And maybe I’ll finally get a Twitter? Maybe.) Anyway, I’ve been recommended this book a ton in addition to just wanting to read it so I’m really looking forward to diving into this one ASAP.
That’s all for this week’s WWW Wednesday. Leave a comment if you participated this week too so I can read your post – or let me know what you’re currently reading below!

Oh, I loved Rebecca and this is the perfect time of year to read it. Hope you enjoy once you get to it! Happy reading ❤️
Thank you! I’m already 20 pages in and I love the writing. <3
I read Rebecca when I was young…but have been meaning to settle in for a reread soon. I bought a replacement copy after I moved here, as most of my old favorite books did not follow me into this space. I have been gradually replacing some of them, though.
Here’s MY WWW POST
I hope you do get to reread it soon! I’ve been getting lots of books in hardcover in hopes that they won’t fall apart as easily if I have to move them around, but now that my collection has grown this much I worry a bit about how I would even manage to do that once the time comes!
I absolutely adored Fangs as well! I read it two days in a row because it just made me so happy! I read it from the library though, so I really need to get my hands on a copy of my own so I can reread it in the future!
I wanted so badly to read my copy for two days in a row and I thought about it! It’s definitely such a nice pick-me-up, I hope you can get your own copy soon!
Fangs sounds so sweet! And same here, I haven’t read Rebecca yet, but hoping to read it sometime this year. I heard that there is a movie that just released, too, so I’m intrigued to watch that as well.
I heard of the movie too! I’m trying really hard to actually watch adaptations after I finish books, so I’d love to check it out too. I hope you get to read it soon!
Julie Anna, I adore Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, actually I re-read it just this year. I hope you will love it, too! Take care and happy reading! 👋📚😃
Thank you! I’m only 20 pages in so far but the writing is so beautiful. I have very good feelings about it based on just that!
Rebecca is one of my all time favorite classics! I look forward to hearing your thoughts when you’ve finished!
Thank you! I’ve been recommended it so many times and I’m really looking forward to reading it.
I’ve been meaning to read Rebecca for so long now… I hope it will be a good one for you! xx
Thank you! Rebecca’s been on my TBR for so long now so I’m so happy to finally be reading it.
I should probably follow your lead some time soon. xD I hope you will enjoy it! xx
A Little Life is a tough read. So much trauma and emotion. I had to keep putting it down but the characters were so real to me that I did eventually finish it and gave it 5 stars.
Here’s my post:

I have a feeling that I’m going to do the same thing. Already there’s’ so much trauma and I’m only in the beginning of the book, but it also seems like a book that’s going to stick with me for a very long time.
I’m happy you enjoyed Fangs 🙂 It does go by so fast, doesn’t it? I hope Andersen continues it in some way. Have a great week!
