Emma

Emma by Jane Austen

This is a classic novel that follows the always-meddling Emma and her tendency to play matchmaker for the people in her village – even if its exactly what gets her into trouble.

I am finally getting around to reading this classic! The only previous Jane Austen I read was Pride and Prejudice, and sadly it was not a new favorite classic of mine. I also still have Sense and Sensibility and Persuasion on my physical TBR. I’m not far into this one yet, but I’ve heard this is a lot of people’s favorite Austen!

Star Trek: A Choice of Catastrophes by Michael Schuster

A Choice of Catastrophes is a Star Trek Original Series novel. It primarily follows Dr. McCoy on the return from a supply delivery when things on The Enterprise go awry. Between power failures and medical emergencies, the crew must get to the bottom of it for the life of the Enterprise and everyone on it.

I acquired a small collection of Star Trek novels, and this is the first one that I’m picking up. It feels like it’s going by quickly, but at the same time I feel like the characters aren’t driving the story like they should.

The Power

The Power by Naomi Alderman

The Power is a dystopian novel set in a world where women start developing an electrifying power. This results in a world where women grow more powerful than men, and this book explores what the world looks like with this change of power.

Although I loved the concept for The Power, I was unfortunately left disappointed by its execution. There are a lot of POVs, and with more time and less POVs I think we would have seen the effects of the power on society at a more detailed level. The story progression just felt overall rushed and never fully fleshed out. Regardless, I’m still very interested in this concept, so do let me know if you’ve read similar books!

This Book is the Longest Sentence Ever Written and then Published by Dave Cowen

This book is an experimental memoir detailing Dave Cowen’s life and most definitive moments. It is also a record-breaking one sentence long, and shares a history of past attempts at this record, as well as other examples in literature.

The author of this novel reached out to me on Instagram to read this. I haven’t read a memoir with this kind of stream-of-conscious style, and I found this narrative really explores memoirs in a whole new way. I did find it needed some edits, but overall it was a pretty interesting book to experience.

Progress Over Perfection

Progress Over Perfection by Emma Norris

Progress Over Perfection is a non-fiction book that introduces readers to mindful productivity and combating perfectionism. It provides tips and action items for readers to apply these concepts in their everyday lives.

This book had a lot of good starting information and explored the common fallacies behind what productivity is. However, I would say that this book does have a target audience best suited to people in their early twenties / starting their careers / new to personal development subjects.

Mortmain Hall by Martin Edwards

Mortmain Hall follows amateur sleuth Rachel Savernake during the 1930’s. While hosting a gathering featuring those who have cheated the gallows, a body is found at the base of a cliff. At first, this is considered to be an accidental death –  but Rachel Savernake is not so sure.

This is another book I received from NetGalley. I haven’t read a mystery like this in a while, so it’ll be nice to read one again. I actually meant to read this one earlier in the month but didn’t, so I’d like to read it now.
