So I ended up taking another, longer hiatus. I haven’t been super well lately which made me unable to blog for almost all of last month! I’m working my way back to it though and I can say that I’ve definitely missed it.

In that time I’ve thankfully been able to read on the better days! I’ll only go through my last couple of reads. I hope your January was filled with lots of good books!

Currently Reading:

The Space Between Worlds by Micaiah Johnson

The Space Between Worlds takes place in a universe where multiverse travel is finally possible, but nobody can visit a world where their counterpart is still alive. The story follows Cara, who has already lost 372 counterparts to various causes of death. This makes her a perfect candidate for multiverse travel, but when one of her eight remaining counterparts dies mysteriously, she is flung into a new world with an old secret, and what she discovers is her role in a plot that could endanger the entire multiverse.

I absolutely love the way the premise of this book has been executed so far! It’s such a unique concept and I love the amount of development that’s gone into the concept of traveling between multiverses and the mystery behind Cara’s counterpart deaths. The characters are so fleshed out as well; I can’t wait to continue reading this one!

Four Hundred Souls by Ibram X. Kendi and Keisha N. Blain

Four Hundred Souls is a chronological history of stories of Black America over the course of four hundred years. These stories are told by ninety authors, including scholars, activists, historians, journalists, and many others who restored and redefined how we write history.

I just started reading this book yesterday, and each chapter, while on the shorter side, says so much about our history in that time period. There’s so much history in this book that’s not included in this detail (if at all) in our curriculums and I’m only towards the beginning of the book. I really like how so many writers have come together to make this book happen, and I’d love to read more about their works as well.

Recently Read:

Crownchasers by Rebecca Coffindaffer

Crownchasers follows Alyssa Farshot, who’s tried her whole life to outrun her family legacy of being next in line for the throne. But when Alyssa’s uncle becomes gravely ill, Alyssa finds out she’s not next in line – instead, he calls for the first crownchase in seven centuries, and the first to find the royal seal earns the throne. Alyssa’s duty to her uncle compels her to take part in the chase, but once the chase turns deadly, she realizes more than just the empire is at stake.

This was the sci-fi read I needed! This book was fast-paced and a page-turner like I expected. I was absolutely surprised by the ending as well, but then found out this book is actually the first in a duology. I guess I’m going to have to patiently wait until the second book comes out to see what happens next!

Detransition, Baby by Torrey Peters

Detransition, Baby follows three women, cisgender and transgender, whose lives change after an unexpected pregnancy. After Reese’s significant other Ames detransitions, Reese finds herself coping with her loneiness by sleeping with married men. Ames, with the loss of his relationship with Reese after detransitioning, wants to find a way back to her. When Ames finds out his boss and lover Katrina is pregnant, Ames wonders if this is his chance for Reese to return to his life – and the three of them to be together.

This book was an emotional journey from start to finish, but the ending absolutely stunned me. There were so many elements of what it’s like to be trans that were discussed in this book, as well as the intersectionality of transgender people and how these parts of their identity shape them in different ways. This debut was so well-written and I’d highly recommend picking it up.

Up Next:

A Dark and Hollow Star by Ashley Shuttleworth

A Dark and Hollow Star takes place in the city of Toronto, where the Eight Courts of Law have lived and sworn to do no harm against humans. That is, until a series of murders rocks the city and threatens to expose faeries to the world, while a war is brewing between the Mortal and Immortal realms. The story follows four teens that each know truths about the murder and must work together to find the murderer.

I was so excited to receive the e-ARC for this book, and i can’t wait to read it any longer! I’m also in a major SFF mood (see: Crownchasers and The Space Between Worlds), so I’m definitely going to pick this one up next.

That’s all for this week’s WWW Wednesday. Leave a comment if you participated this week too so I can read your post – or let me know what you’re currently reading below!
