With the US elections last week, I ended up being fairly distracted and not reading as much! I also had to work overnight on the weekend and my body is not equipped for all-nighters (or near all-nighters in this case), so I didn’t read as much as I wanted to this past weekend either. I’m hoping this week will lead to more reading though! I know we always say “so many books, so little time,” but lately that’s really hit me. Is there a bookish phrase for that feeling? There’s so many books that I want to read now. Maybe a weekend readathon is in order!

Anyway, here’s what I’ve been reading this week:

Currently Reading:

Devonna by Audrey Francis-Plante

Six years after the death of her cousin, Devonna Moreau still carries the guilt of it all. The truth is, that she may have been able to save her if she were able physically feel anything. Until one day, Devonna feels the touch of Bram Hanaghan – but Bram is a ghost. Devonna hopes to use the encounter to find her cousin, but vengeful ghosts have other plans for her.

I won this book in a giveaway from the author. I feel like I’m flying through this book! There’s definitely lots I have yet to learn about the characters and I’m curious to see where these characters and their backstories take them.

A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara

A Little Life follows four college classmates who move to New York. Over time they navigate complexities and their own relationships, but they find that Jude has been struggling and continues to suffer, defined by the unspeakable traumas that defined his childhood and his adult life.

I find myself having to read this book a little at a time. It’s very rough at times so I have to give myself time to digest what’s happening every now and then. I’m not sure if I will finish this before next Wednesday, but I anticipate it will be pretty close at the rate I’m going. I’m definitely glad I’m taking my time with it though.

Recently Read:

I Hope You Get This Message by Farah Naz Rishi

It is rumored that after another planet makes contact with Earth that the world will end in seven days. For Jesse Hewitt, one bad blow after another leaves him indifferent if things were to end now. But for Cate Collins, she wants to use the time to learn about the father she’s never met. And for Adeem Khan, he can’t forgive his sister for leaving. And with only seven days left, these three people are brought together.

I really liked the subtle references to intelligent life and their views on humankind more than anything about this book. As a STEM person all of the technical references and others done so well made me really happy, but I also think these references were super accessible. I also really like how these characters connected; it wasn’t how I expected it to work out! The only thing that bothered me personally is how this ended.

The Little Book of Life Skills by Erin Zammett Ruddy

The Little Book of Life Skills is a guide to all the little things to get you by in day-to-day life, from work tips to house organization to setting routines. It includes explanations from experts in the field plus strategies to implement these tips.

I enjoy books like these from time to time! What stood out for me in this book was that a lot of these tips were also directed towards those a little older than the “just outside college crowd”, which is the usual demographic for books like these. While several of these are common knowledge now, there’s definitely plenty that I learned as well.

Up Next:

The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Brontë

This classic follows Helen Graham, who returns to Wildfell Hall after a failed marriage. There, she starts her life under a new name and makes a living as a painter.

I have yet to read any of Anne Brontë‘s works and I’d really like to change that. I recently learned about the feelings towards divorce in this era in more detail and I’m curious about the portrayal of that in this book.

That’s all for this week’s WWW Wednesday. Leave a comment if you participated this week too so I can read your post – or let me know what you’re currently reading below!
